Humanitarian missions and peace enforcement have sent our troops to Somalia, Cuba, Haiti, Bosnia and Kosovo. In the last decade, military downsizing has increased the likelihood that each Soldier will eventually participate on an extended mission. The impact of these long separations is of increasing concern with two-thirds of Soldiers now married and deployments to the Former Yugoslavia entering a fifth year. Differing coping strategies are needed through five stages of deployment. The Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense (DASD) for Force Health Protection & Readiness (FHP&R) serves as the principal staff assistant and advisor to the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Health Affairs) for all DoD deployment medicine policies, programs, and activities. In carrying out these responsibilities the office is responsible for deployment related health policy, doctrine, theater information systems, system rightsizing, and international agreements.

The days and weeks after a homecoming from war can be filled with excitement, relief, and many other feelings. This guide is for military family members, like you. This guide is also helpful for friends and returning veterans themselves. Following the veterans return from overseas duty, the entire family will go through a transition. This guide will help each of you understand readjustment during homecoming.

Army Families Online is the cornerstone of Army Well-Being communication ,improves constituent understanding of Well-Being initiatives, and obtains constituent feedback. The site offers valuable news and information about Army Life; a SmartBook that offers one-stop access to information and resources through Web links and phone numbers; access to online Well-Being Polls; electronic versions of Well-Being publications such as FLO Notes and Army Well-Being.

Operation: Military Kids (OMK) is the U.S. Army's collaborative effort with America's communities to support the children and youth impacted by deployment. This initiative was officially launched in April 2005. Since its inception OMK has touched 65,000 military youth and provided information to 7200 community members across the United States.
